Double Tragedy in Sacramento

Posted by casey on September 30th, 2006

A Long Life Together - Destroyed in a Second

A couple spending an afternoon together, ruminating on their upcoming 50th anniversary, as well as the 50 year journey they had been on to get there.

A 14-year-old boy, with a friend, handling a high-powered hunting rifle at a near by ranch, that happened to go off.

In the time it took to blink an eye, a bullet flew from one of the ranch homes dotting Lake Natoma Drive, whizzed across the street and tore through the couple’s silver Honda Accord, striking Gary Marcy — a horrific trajectory of chance and circumstance that remained under investigation Thursday by the Sheriff’s Department.

“All I heard was a ‘pop.’ Then the windows all broke,” Madeline Marcy, 69, told The Bee. “And all of a sudden, my husband just (slumped) back. I had blood all over me.”

Her passenger seat was slightly reclined to accommodate her bad back, she explained. The bullet passed in front of her face to pierce her husband’s neck.

She said she tried to take control of the car, veering in a daze to the right and then left before crashing into a wooden fence. Neighbors rushed to the car.

Authorities quickly found the shooter — a 14-year-old boy. The boy, whom The Bee is not identifying because of his age, had accidentally discharged a high-powered hunting rifle, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

His mother, who had arrived home just after the shooting, was one of the many residents who called 911 in the aftermath.

“It’s a freak accident, but I don’t understand what a 14-year-old boy was doing with a gun,” he [Gary Marcy’s son] said. “A second before, a second later, maybe my dad would be here — or, I could have lost both of my parents.”

In the dining room, family members surrounded Madeline Marcy, fielding telephone calls and trying to arrange for a memorial service next week.

“I always did love him,” Madeline Marcy said over her empty kitchen table. “We had a happy life; a real happy life.”

Tragic for the life lost. Tragic for the boy who will have to live with his irresponsibility, and the fact that he took a life.

I can’t imagine the pain in both of those homes right now.

Urination in Norway

Posted by casey on September 29th, 2006

This is the best.  Boys at a school in Norway have now been required to sit down when they pee.  Aside from the hillarity of the story in general, the money quote from the head of The Democrats Party is priceless:

“When boys are not allowed to pee in the natural way, the way boys have done for generations, it is meddling with God’s work,” Kleppe told the newspaper.

“It is a human right not to have to sit down like a girl,” Kleppe said.

Amen to that brother!

Overheard in an elevator

Posted by casey on September 28th, 2006

Woman 1: So, where have you vacationed the past few years?

Woman 2: Oh, last year Jamaica. The year before Bermuda. This year it was Cuba.

Woman 1: Which place was your favorite?

Woman 2: Um…Cuba, for sure.

Woamn 1: Why, because there aren’t any Americans there?

Woman 2: Well, that for sure, and because it is just so beautiful.

Ahh. That’s the stuff I love about living in Toronto.

Decapitating Christ vs. Decapitating Mohammed

Posted by casey on September 27th, 2006

The truth of the matter is that Christ, and Christians, are completely and totally fair game when it comes to satire, representation, mis-representation, and just plain ol’ blasphemy. And, that’s alright. As a Christian, I don’t like it when a crucifix is submerged in urine, and it is called art. But, hey, we’ve gone through the Enlightenment, live in a Modern (and increasingly Post-Modern) cultural milieu, and recognize the right to people’s freedom of speech.

What we don’t do is bully people into giving unwarranted apologies, kill people, or cry about it. That’s why I think it is important to document some of those incidents that seperate Christians and Muslims in their response to criticism, satire, and provocation:

Madonna Crucified

In Madonna’s latest “Confessions” tour, she is mock crucified on stage, while wearing a crown of thorns - something that Christian’s have responded to with outrage and widespread violence, even burning effigies of the pop singer largely ignored:

madonna.jpg

Madonna, in a statement made as the Confessions tour ended in Japan today, said: “There seems to be many misinterpretations about my appearance on the cross and I wanted to explain it myself once and for all.

“It is no different than a person wearing a cross or ‘taking up the cross’ as it says in the Bible. My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole.”

She added, “I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing.”

A lot of people seem to think that they know what Jesus would be doing if here were “alive today” (another misunderstanding of Christian theology, by the way).

Annika had a good response to Madonna’s latest attempt at boosting record sales through free publicity:

If Madonna actually had a pair she would risk a fatwa by insulting people who would kill her in a heatbeat instead of ridiculing Roman Catholics who are so used to it by now that we don’t even bat an eyelash.

See the photo she has of Madonna at the link, and another one here.

And, in related news, the crucifixion scene might make it onto prime time television. Can’t wait to see the riots after that one.

South Park on Mohammed

In a completly antithetical piece of news, the creators/writers of the cartoon South Park have stated the following on lampooning Islam or Mohammed:

“That’s where we kind of agree with some of the people who’ve criticized our show,” Stone says. “Because it really is open season on Jesus. We can do whatever we want to Jesus, and we have. We’ve had him say bad words. We’ve had him shoot a gun. We’ve had him kill people. We can do whatever we want. But Mohammed, we couldn’t just show a simple image.”

During the part of the show where Mohammed was to be depicted — benignly, Stone and Parker say — the show ran a black screen that read: “Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohammed on their network.”

Other networks took a similar course, refusing to air images of Mohammed — even when reporting on the Denmark cartoon riots — claiming they were refraining because they’re religiously tolerant, the South Park creators say.

“No you’re not,” Stone retorts. “You’re afraid of getting blown up. That’s what you’re afraid of. Comedy Central copped to that, you know: ‘We’re afraid of getting blown up.’”

The episode in which the writers wanted to depict Mohammed also:

shows a cartoon (supposedly created by al Qaeda) in which Jesus defecates on President Bush.

But, hey…that’s cool. No rioting here.

German Opera

Religious fears force off opera

A Berlin opera company cancelled a Mozart production over security fears because it features the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus.

Come on…who are we kidding here? Is it really because it featured the severed heads of Mohammed and Jesus…or is the BBC softening the story? It has nothing to do with the severed head of Jesus - the security fears are strictly because the opera shows Mohammed decapitated. No one…and I mean no one…cares if Jesus’ is depicted decapitated. Let’s just be honest, the opera company was:

Deutsche Oper said “incalculable” security risks would be posed by staging Idomeneo.

“We know the consequences of the conflict over the (Muhammad) caricatures,” the opera company said in a statement.

The Jawa Report has the money shot - Mohammed’s bloodied head, on stage.

Girl on the Right, Hot Air, and Michelle Malkin among many others have more.

Car Dealer Jihad

I’m sure you’ve already heard this story too. A car dealer in Ohio was set to release a radio spot that declared jihad on other car dealerships, promoted “fatwa Fridays,” and promised cars that could comfortably seat 12 jihadis in the back, dealers in head to toe burqas, as well as free rubber swords for the kiddies. After being adamant that he would not pull the commercial, the owner of the dealership has now caved to pressure.

Video over at LGF of an interview between MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson, and a spokeswoman from Ohio’s CAIR chapter. He basically tells it like it is, saying that it really seems like CAIR is defending radical jihadis. Well…it does.

Don’t make fun of even radical Islam…or…or…or something…

Conclusion

I can’t figure out if we need to tell the whinners to quite crying or if Christians need to get more outraged. I wouldn’t advocate bullying as a tactic, though it does seem to work. But, maybe we need to be more outraged when Christ is desecrated? After all, everyone thinks Christians are intolerant anyway…maybe we actually should be.

In the end though, I think I would just rather be tolerant of childish, bored, and redundant attacks on Christ, and Christians, content to shake my head and blow it off, as, it really is just stupid. I don’t need to cry about it, or threaten people, or hurt people, or burn effigies, or whatever. I think I can handle it. Some, though, it seems cannot.

Jesus as a Muslim

Posted by casey on September 25th, 2006

This came out a little while ago (@LGF). Craziness.
The VP of CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) in a speech at North Texas University titled “Christ in Islam” claimed that if Christ were alive today, he would be a Muslim:

Meek, a self-proclaimed Muslim for the past 16 years, said his interest in Islam began when he was studying to become a Baptist preacher. He said he began wondering if Muslims were “confused Christians” or whether Christians were the ones who were confused. Meek said he was unsure of how to confirm his beliefs.
“I started from the prospective that I wanted to study the Bible to convince people that it’s true,” he said.
As he started studying the history of the text, he said he began doubting the truth of the Bible.
Meek said he compared the two religions and decided on Islam.
“It’s more compelling, more attractive to me,” he said.
He now works as the president of the Islamic Association in Lewisville and said he enjoys speaking on the topic of religion.
“Islam is totally more convincing,” he said.
Meek outlined the fundamental doctrine of Islam, a monotheistic religion like Christianity. About 1.7 billion people worldwide practice this faith.
Muslims affirm that all people are born Muslim, and they can either choose to embrace the teachings of their creator, Allah, or convert to a different religion, Meek said.
“If Jesus were here, he’d be a Muslim, and he’d say what I’m saying,” he said.

Ayman Taleb, president of the Muslim Student Association, went on to state:

“People would be dazzled at the fact that Muslims revere the same God that Christians and Jews do, and revere all the prophets mentioned in the Bible,” he said.

There are more than a few problems with this.

As Christians worship Christ as God, affirm monotheism, yet also affirm the Trinity, it is impossible to state that Christians and Muslims worship “the same God.” Allah is not the God of the Old and New Testaments. When Muslims affirm Christ as God, as outlined say in the Chalcedonian Formula, then maybe they can make that claim.

Other than that, would Jesus be a Muslim were he here today? Is there really that little difference between the faiths? I doubt it.
In John 18, as Jesus is arrested, about to be crucified -

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

Matthew adds:

Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

and Luke:

And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

Haven’t seen much of that in Islam.

Then again, comparing some images, I see differences:

pope21.jpg

Some of Christ’s followers: God Is Charity/Love.

pope31.jpg

Some of Mohammed’s followers: “We are all ready to die for Prophet Mohammed”

(Images from Hot Air)

or, this one:

westminster0032.jpg

Or, maybe the difference is that some of Mohammed’s followers kill a nun (one of Jesus’ followers), but that nun actually forgives her killers with her dying breaths.

Or, there is just the simple fact that Jesus said:

I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except by me. John 14.6

Jesus a Muslim…ehh, I ain’t buyin’ it.

RightGirl Doesn’t Hold Back

Posted by casey on September 25th, 2006

I am. Here’s the story:

According to the Toronto Sun, a task force has been set up to study the effects of “Islamophobia” on Muslim students on Ontario college and University campuses.

The Canadian Federation of Students launched a task force yesterday that will go from school to school across the province to hear from Muslim students who have had good and bad experiences because of their religion.

“I’ve noticed differences in how people treat you,” U of T student Ausma Malik said, adding the treatment can be subtle and come from both students and faculty.

The task force will also look at ways to make Muslim students more comfortable at school — including the availability of halal meats, special prayer rooms and on-campus multifaith centres.

Something as simple as a prayer room in a library to make it easier to study and pray five times a day, as is required of observant Muslims, would make things better, Malik said.

Further investigation shows that the goals of this Task Force are:

Provide a forum for Muslim students and campus community members to speak out;

Encourage awareness and education about the needs of Muslim students and campus community members in Ontario;

Document incidents of Islamophobia and institutional responses on campuses in Ontario;

Develop strategies and document successes in addressing the needs of Muslim students in Ontario and make recommendations that are campus-specific and system-wide; and

Produce a Task Force Report on the hearings for publication and distribution.

So, I read that and then started to look into it further, wondering who pays for such a thing. It turns out that, as a Graduate Student at U of T, I do.

That’s the way Unions work, isn’t it? I used to work for a labor union. I paid dues, and received benefits. The problem was that the union used my money for all sorts of things that I didn’t like. But that was tough, because without paying your dues, you could not receive benefits, and, indeed, could not even work. That’s where they get you. You pay the dues, or you don’t participate. We use your money how we see fit.

Well, as a student at U of T, you buy into the Student Union, Local 98 - Canadian Federation of Students. Turns out that I buy into the student union, whether I like it or not, and, in return 2 things happen. 1) I get good things like perscription drug coverage, and dental care. 2) They get to use my money to study “Islamophobia,” on campus, and provide “prayer rooms” in libraries for observant Muslims. No two ways around it - just the way it is.

There are a couple of things that need to be highlighted about this “Task Force.”

First, according to reports here, here, and here, this task force was begun last year, after anti-Islamic graffiti was found at Ryerson University, as a campaign to combat “Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, and Racism”:

“When Muslim students at Ryerson were targeted, students across the province realised that we needed to come together to promote inclusive campus communities, so we launched a campaign against Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, and Racism,” said Greener. “The more we became familiar with the challenges facing Muslim students, the more it became apparent that issues like access to suitable prayer space and halal food options have received little attention. Even the financial barriers to education are magnified for Muslim students whose religion can prohibit taking interest-bearing loans.”

One of the sites even has this nifty logo:

islamo.png

My major question has to do with the original, broader mandate of the campaign. What happened to combating anti-semitism, and racism? According to the above paragraph, it might sound as if those issues were never really considered. As soon as it is stated that the campaign had 3 broad goals, the spokesperson says “The more we became familiar with the challenges facing Muslim students…” No word on Jewish students, or other minorities. Was this ever really a broad based effort to confront anything more than “Islamophobia?” I have my doubts.

Secondly, since when do public Universities provide prayer space for any religous group? There are schools within U of T that are religious schools (Toronto School of Theology), but these colleges entered the University as Christian schools. Further, if you want to talk about financial barriers, talk about international students forced to pay nearly 3 times the amount of domestic fees for tuition. But hey, that is just the way it goes, right? That is the cost of education, right? I think so. But no, let’s divert student funds towards studying how to make it easier for this one particular group to pay their tuition.

Thirdly, why does everything have to be a -phobia these days? I don’t understand it. Well, maybe I do understand it. When someone doesn’t agree with you, or holds an alternative position, it is always easier to insult them than it is to intelligently argue with them. Which is why, people who believe that Islam is not as peaceful as it claims to be, who do not agree with its principles, are automatically labelled “Islamophobic.”

This is ridiculous. A phobia is “a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.”

I do not have an irrational and persistent fear of Islam, or Muslims. Does the fact that there are not provided “adequate prayer spaces” on campus necessarily indicate a “persistent and irrational fear” of Muslims? I think not. It probably means that, like Christians and Jews, you have to find your own place to pray. Does the fact that most student loans are interest bearing, contrary to some faiths, but certainly contrary to everybody’s financial desires, describe a situation of genuine oppression against Muslim students? No. But, when you want to demonize the opposition without actually dealing with issues, how better than to brand them as fearful, irrational nuts?

In the meantime, here are the lines from my tuition invoice:

invoice1.png

invoice2.png

$60.84, going for a number of things, but, certainly to this misguided, exclusive, and biased Taskforce. And, some of the fees students are charged are refundable...but not this one.

Remember, this is the same Student Union, who in the name of “inclusivity,” agreed to include the Campus’ Pro-Life group’s literature in their welcome package to freshmen- only to then deny its inclusion after all the material had been printed - for no credible reason.

On the bright side, if you are a U of T student, you are invited to participate in these “talks,” or, at least in a planning meeting. In my latest SAC newsletter, I am told:

sac.png

Xpression against Oppression, huh? Clever.

More info, vent your displeasure, whatever:

Canadian Feberation of Students Press Release listing Jesse Greener as the contact: 416.925.3825.

Taskforce on the Needs of Muslim Students - with a healthy domain name: noracism.ca

University of Toronto Student’s Administrative Council - with contact information for our campus officials.

I’ll at least be calling to express my displeasure. Probably won’t attend the planning meeting though. Hell, maybe I’m afraid.

Gaza Terror Group Formed to Attack Christian Targets

Gazan Muslims Form Group To Attack Christian Targets

Muslims in Hamas-controlled Gaza have formed an ad hoc terrorist group promising to attack Christian targets to avenge the Pope’s choice of a quotation insinuating that Islam is prone to violence.

The group, which calls itself the “Army of guidance,” sent an announcement to news agencies based in Gaza saying that “every place relevant to Christians will be a target until the cursed infidel – the Vatican – apologizes to Muslims.”

Does the irony of this even need to be commented upon?

Anderson Cooper Takes On Ahmadinejad

Posted by casey on September 23rd, 2006

Saw the video over at Hot Air, thought it was quite witty on Cooper’s part.

In short, when Cooper asks the Iranian president too many uncomfortable questions about his holocaust denials, Ahmadinejad asks Cooper if these are his own questions, or if someone else is behind this line of questioning.

Cooper’s response is brilliant.

Hate Being Sick

Posted by casey on September 23rd, 2006

Not much more to say than that…

After my week last week, I think my body just crashed Sunday night. Sick all day Monday and Tuesday, a bit of a break on Wednesday … and then Wednesday night until now, a cold. Almost through it now though.

Now I have to play catch up, which is what started this whole sickness thing to begin with.

Kidnapped Baby Found Alive and Well

Posted by casey on September 20th, 2006

The kidnapped Missouri newborn, taken after her mother’s throat was slashed, has turned up alive and in excellent condition:

UNION, Mo. — An newborn abducted after her mother was slashed was found alive Tuesday in excellent condition, and a woman who had recently miscarried was arrested, officials said.

Dr. Peter McCarthy, an emergency room physician at St. John’s Hospital in Washington, Mo., said 11-day-old Abigale Lynn Woodshas been reunited with her mother, father and other relatives. She was expected to be released from the hospital later Tuesday.

“The family is elated and thankful to everyone in the community who prayed for them,” McCarthy said. “The baby was hydrated, nourished and in good condition when she arrived at the hospital.”

The abductor had been profiled as someone who had a child die recently or as someone who could not have children, told people she was pregnant and needed to steal a child so her lie would not be found out.

Apparently, the suspect is a woman who very recently had a late-term miscarriage, and was desperate to have a baby.

Having recently gone through the miscarriage process, only at 10 weeks, and knowing the stress and difficulty this brings, I can see how someone could make incredibly irrational decisions.  I cannot imagine having to go through a late-term miscarriage.  This is not to excuse the woman’s behavior in the least.  It is only to say that when confronted with unspeakable sadness and distress, people can do some pretty horrific things.  And, thanks is to go to the suspect’s sister-in-law, who broke the case.
It is wonderful news that baby Abbey was found alive.

My Contribution to Hope

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

Ok, so all I’ve been reading and writing about is bad news. Depressing stuff, that is actually getting me down. This past Sunday I was preaching at Runnymede United Church (though I’m a Baptist) in Toronto, and this was my sermon, a rewriting of a sermon I preached a while back, but needed to hear again.

Psalm 73 - A Psalm of Asaph

Truly God is good to the upright, to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
For they have no pain; their bodies are sound and sleek.
They are not in trouble as others are; they are not plagued like other people.
Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them like a garment.
Their eyes swell out with fatness; their hearts overflow with follies.
They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues range over the earth.
Therefore the people turn and praise them, and find no fault in them.
And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?
Such are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.
All in vain I have kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.
For all day long I have been plagued, and am punished every morning.

If I had said, “I will talk on in this way,” I would have been untrue to the circle of your children.
But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,
until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I perceived their end.
Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin.
How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors!
They are like a dream when one awakes; on awaking you despise their phantoms.

When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart,
I was stupid and ignorant; I was like a brute beast toward you.
Nevertheless I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me with honor.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Indeed, those who are far from you will perish; you put an end to those who are false to you.
But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, to tell of all your works.

Sermon: When my heart was pricked.

Some Laughter Amid the Bad News

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

Amid the news about the Pope, I read this over at JunkYardBlog, about the people burning Anglican churches after the Pope’s comments:

THEY’RE ANGLICANS, YOU NIMRODS.
NO POPE. GOT THAT!  NO POPE FOR ANGLICANS!

Actually the Anglicans were probably a pretty good choice. Except for the African Anglican churches, which are engaged in a life and death struggle in the midst of poverty, war, and genocide, and are rising to meet the challenges with resolve and spiritual clarity, most Anglican churches are pretty safe to attack. They aren’t exactly big C.S. Lewis fans anymore, instead committing wholeheartedly to the timid relativism Lewis warned about.

If there weren’t any pacifist Quakers or Unitarians around, an Anglican church probably makes a pretty good target if you are an outraged Islamist looking for consequences-free religious terrorism. Catholics will go all Oriana on you. JP II fired them up about Communism and look what happened to that. Baptists? They will shoot you. The choir probably has Tec-9s stashed under those robes. The Church of Christ? No, they’ll shoot you, too, and then they’ll shoot the Baptists for good measure. Pentecostals will do that glossolalia thing and get freak-out Jesus strength with +2 to hit and double damage. A Pentecostal acquaintance of mine, a level-headed teacher not prone to exaggeration, once told me he had seen a ninety pound woman in the grip of the Spirit lift the five-hundred pound top off of an altar and throw it across the room. You don’t want to be caught pointing a Molotov cocktail at those people.

But Anglicans? Burn out an ECUSA church and they’ll give you a grumpy harrumph and draft a resolution explaining why it’s more important than ever to have a gay bishop right away.

Bwahhahahahahahah!!!

Oh man that made me feel better!

Anglican Priest Keeps Position After Conversion to Hinduism

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

Here’s the article.

Excerpt:

A PRIEST with the Church of England who converted to Hinduism has been allowed to continue to officiate as a cleric.

The Rev David Hart’s diocese renewed his licence this summer even though he had moved to India, changed his name to Ananda and daily blesses a congregation of Hindus with fire previously offered up to Nagar, the snake god. He also “recites Gayatri Mantram with the same devotion with which he celebrates the Eucharist”, according to The Hindu, India’s national newspaper.

He also said that he would continue to celebrate as an Anglican priest when he visited England, but he would also visit a Hindu temple while there. “My philosophical position is that all religions are cultural constructs,” he said. “I am acting out God’s story in local terms.”

Ahhhhh….you gotta love religious pluralism.

Chubby-Bunny Kills Woman at Ontario Fair

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

A bit of bad news that deserves a post all its own, as, it is a game I have played with my youth group many times.

Marshmallow-stuffing contest at Ontario fair kills woman

Playing chubby bunny is ‘like spraying Styrofoam’ in esophagus, paramdic says.

Janet Rudd was just being helpful when she agreed to take part in what she thought was a bit of lighthearted fun — a marshmallow-eating contest known as chubby bunny at the Western Fair in London, Ont.

It was a decision that led to her death, and many observers wonder why this game, which killed a 12-year-old girl at an Illinois school in 1999, is still being played.

Janet and her twin Jennifer, 32, were strolling at the fairgrounds Tuesday evening when they were approached by a fair organizer who needed two people for a contest.

The game calls for participants to stuff their mouths with marshmallows until they can no longer say the words “chubby bunny.” As more marshmallows are added, the words become increasingly garbled, which is meant to entertain the crowd.

She made it to four marshmallows before quiting, and then choking. I have myself had probably 12 large marshmallows in my mouth for this event, and have seen high school students in various youth groups do more.

I am sure that we will not be playing again.

Prayers for Janet Rudd’s family.

Two Bizarre Kidnappings - More Bad News

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

Overshadowed by the Muslim reaction to the Pope’s comments, in the news this weekend there were two more pieces of bad news:

19 Year Old Kidnapped By Parents For Forced Abortion

On Friday, last week, a Maine couple tied up their 19 year old daughter, threw her in the car, and took off for New York to force her to have an abortion. Reportedly, the race of the father, who is black, was their motivating factor.  She escaped, however, and the parents are barred from contact with the daughter.  Also, they face 71/2 - 15 years in prison if convicted of the kidnapping.  See also here for more.

Woman has Throat Slashed, and 10 Day Old Baby Stolen

In Missouri, a 21 year old woman had her throat slashed, and was left for dead, as another woman kidnapped her 10 day old baby.  An Amber Alert has been issued, and a composite sketch of the suspect released, but the baby is still missing.

And I have no idea how to tag a post like this…

Roundup of Bad News

Posted by casey on September 19th, 2006

So, I’ve been completely out of it for the past couple of days - ill mind you. So, upon my return, I thought I would try to round up all the bad news that has me melancholy the past few days. From the Muslim reaction to the Pope’s comments, to a woman dead after a beach picnic with her fiancee, here’s all the news that’s fit to…um, despair by:

On the Pope -

Again, we have the Pope compared to Hitler, and this time Bin Laden - which, doesn’t quite make sense to me. But hey, whatever gets your jihadis inflamed.

Death threats against the Pope continue to make headlines. Michelle Malkin (quoting Catholic Londoner) reports on a demonstration outside Westminster Cathedral in London, where protesters shouted slogans such as :

“Pope Benedict go to Hell” “Pope Benedict you will pay, the Muja Hadeen are coming your way” “Pope Benedict watch your back”

Particularly disturbing (to me anyway), and, reason enough why the Pope should not apologize - ever - is this protester:

westminster0032.jpg

Slave of Allah, huh? So far, I have seen, among other offensive things, Jesus called a “monkey on a cross,” and now, the “slave of Allah.” However, I have not seen (nor do I really expect to see), Christians rising up in arms and firebombing Mosques, which, Malkin points out, is one key difference between us and them.

As of right now, Muslims everywhere are still upset. Though, and this is a bit of a bright spot, (so it really doesn’t belong here), but, via relapsed catholic, at least one Muslim has denounced the violence.

And, in London, security is being beefed up at churches, according to The Jawa Report.

Finally on the Pope end of things (for this morning anyway), this image of the aftermath of a firebombed Greek Orthodox church in the West Bank, found and posted by EU Referendum:

jrl122_wa1.jpg

Lovely.

Also from the Muslim world, comes this story from the Times Online, via Hot Air:

The Girl in Love who Lost her Life for a Picnic

ONE woman who will not be getting married is Yusra al- Azzam, murdered by self- appointed Hamas religious police for the crime of picnicking on the beach with a man who turned out to be her fiancé.

One of the saddest things I have read in a long time. A must read.

Italian Nun killed in Somalia

Posted by casey on September 17th, 2006

Specultaed that this is linked to the Pope’s comments:

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Gunmen shot and killed an Italian nun at a children’s hospital in Mogadishu on Sunday in an attack that drew immediate speculation of links to Muslim anger over the Pope’s recent remarks on Islam.

The Catholic nun’s bodyguard also died in the latest attack apparently aimed at foreign personnel in volatile Somalia.

Not confirmed as related to the Pope’s comments, but, this is the same country where a Cleric advocated that Muslims hunt down and kill the Pope. (also here).

Unbelievable. It was only a matter of time.

It looks to me that in my cursory search, FoxNews is the only one that hasn’t blown by this story.

NABLUS, West Bank — Two West Bank Christian churches were hit by firebombs early Saturday, and a group claiming responsibility said it was protesting Pope Benedict XVI’s remarks about Islam.

Relations between Palestinian Muslims and Christians are generally peaceful, and clergy played down the attacks on an Anglican and a Greek Orthodox church in the city of Nablus as isolated incidents.

But they said they’d worry if more Christian sites are targeted. On Friday, two small explosions went off near a Greek Orthodox church in Gaza, causing minor damage.

“It is easy to worry,” Father Yousef Saada, a Roman Catholic priest in Nablus, said Saturday. “The atmosphere is charged already, and the wise should not accept such acts.”

The firebombs left black scorch marks on the walls and windows of the two Nablus churches. At least five firebombs hit the Anglican church.

In a phone call to The Associated Press, a group calling itself the “Lions of Monotheism” claimed responsibility. The caller said the attacks were meant as a protest against the pope’s remarks about Islam.

Muslims are protesting the Pope’s use of a 14th century quotation about Muhammed’s teachings that characterized what “new” teachings he brought about God as “evil and inhuman,” what they call an insult to their faith, with violent (some might say “evil and inhuman”) attacks against Christian churches.

Notice that the two churches attacked were not Catholic - they were Greek Orthodox and Anglican. Good to know that we are dealing with equal opportunity retaliators - if you are even close to being Catholic (really, if you are not Muslim), we will firebomb you.

Also note that the group claiming responsibility is named, “Lions of Monotheism.” This interests me because, as I noted yesterday, one of the criticisms of the Pope was that he was claiming Christian faith’s superiority over Islam. If any group name screams superiority to me, it is “Lions of Monotheism.” Reasons not least of which being that all three major religions - Islam, Christianity, and Judaism - are monotheistic. It is quite obvious which monotheistic god this group finds superior.

As of yet, the Pope has not caved and given an apology - even though you might not know it from certain headlines -

CNN and BBC’s headlines make it sound as if the Pope has apologized for offending Muslims. FoxNews’ headline is less misleading. The statement released by the Vatican reads:

Concerning the reaction of Muslim leaders to certain passages of the Holy Father’s address at the University of Regensburg, it should be noted that what the Holy Father has at heart — and which emerges from an attentive reading of the textis a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence.

It was certainly not the intention of the Holy Father to undertake a comprehensive study of the jihad and of Muslim ideas on the subject, still less to offend the sensibilities of Muslim faithful.

Quite the contrary, what emerges clearly from the Holy Father’s discourses is a warning, addressed to Western culture, to avoid “the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom” (homily, Sept. 10). A just consideration of the religious dimension is, in fact, an essential premise for fruitful dialogue with the great cultures and religions of the world.

And indeed, in concluding his address in Regensburg, Benedict XVI affirmed how “the world’s profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions. A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion to the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures.”

What is clear then, is the Holy Father’s desire to cultivate an attitude of respect and dialogue toward other religions and cultures, including, of course, Islam.

And further:

Reading the statement, new Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said the Pope’s position on Islam was in line with Vatican teaching that the Church “esteems Muslims, who adore the only God”.

The Holy Father is very sorry that some passages of his speech may have sounded offensive to the sensibilities of Muslim believers,” the statement said.

Basically - I’m sorry you were offended, not for what I said. I do hope he sticks it out.

Monkey on a cross huh? I guess that’s okay. Glad they desire mutual respect of faiths.

Muslims call Pope Hitler

Posted by casey on September 15th, 2006

Yes my friends, more Hitler rhetoric…this time directed at none other than the Pope.

At the outset, let me say that this story is being covered in a huge number of places around the blogosphere. For instance:

BBC Article - Muslim Anger Grows Over Pope’s Speech

BBC Article - Vatican Statement

.pdf copy of the Pope’s speech.

At Hot Air here, and here (with Pope assassination fantasies).

Michelle Malkin says “I support the Pope.”

At Occidentality here and here.

Relapsed Catholic

The Jawa Report has it here, and here.

Aside from the obvious irony of the entire situation, I would like to point out some theological issues I see in this story. But first, let’s recap:

The Pope gave a speech in Germany. During that speech:

…the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said the Prophet Muhammad had brought the world only “evil and inhuman” things.

Let’s get it straight here. The Pope quoted someone from the 14th century who criticized Muhammed.

Again from the BBC article:

In his speech at Regensburg University, the German-born Pope explored the historical and philosophical differences between Islam and Christianity, and the relationship between violence and faith.

Stressing that they were not his own words, he quoted Emperor Manuel II Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire, the Orthodox Christian empire which had its capital in what is now the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The emperor’s words were, he said: “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

Benedict said “I quote” twice to stress the words were not his and added that violence was “incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul”.

“The intention here is not one of retrenchment or negative criticism, but of broadening our concept of reason and its application,” he added in the concluding part of his speech.

“Only thus do we become capable of that genuine dialogue of cultures and religions so urgently needed today.”

To any reasonable person, this is mild and tame. Especially when compared to what people say about and do with the person of Christ. The immediate irony of the situation is that from the “Religion of Peace,” Muslims voicing their discontent at having their prophet criticized (by a 14th century figure) for propogating a violent religion, are showing their contempt through explicitly violent means.

Look at the images at Michelle Malkin’s post linked above. This image of Muslims burning the Pope in effigy at The Jawa Report:

muslims-burn-the-pope.jpg

According to Muslim logic, then, the entire Catholic church should be rising up in protest, even violently, at this deplorable tantrum.

Occidentality points to a Google News story that reports that the Pope’s safety is now in danger for his upcoming visit to Turkey.

And then, this article, the original headline of which the AP apparently thought too inflamatory. Turkish lawmaker compares pope to Hitler (now titled “Fury of pope’s remarks raises concerns” ) -

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Pakistan’s legislature unanimously condemned Pope Benedict XVI Lebanon’s top Shiite cleric demanded an apology. And in Turkey, the ruling party likened the pontiff to Hitler and Mussolini and accused him of reviving the mentality of the Crusades.

Salih Kapusuz, deputy leader of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted party, said Benedict’s remarks were either “the result of pitiful ignorance” about Islam and its prophet or, worse, a deliberate distortion.

“He has a dark mentality that comes from the darkness of the Middle Ages. He is a poor thing that has not benefited from the spirit of reform in the Christian world,” Kapusuz told Turkish state media. “It looks like an effort to revive the mentality of the Crusades.”

“Benedict, the author of such unfortunate and insolent remarks, is going down in history for his words,” Kapusuz added. “He is going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini.”

Can you imagine what would happen if a non-Muslim (or a Muslim for that matter) likened Muhammad to Hitler and Mussolini. And here, it is completely alright, normal even, for the ruling party of Turkey to liken the Pope of all people in the world to Hitler.

Where is the condemnation? Where is the outrage? Not just from Catholics, or from the media, or from normal people. Where is the outrage from the “Moderate” Muslim community? Where is the condemnation from our neighbors for this radical and utterly childish behavior? I haven’t found it yet.

But here’s the theological issue:

From the AP article: Many Muslims accused Benedict of seeking to promote Judeo-Christian dominance over Islam.

This is basically criticizing the Pope for being Catholic. There are two issues I have with this.

First, we see constantly that Islam tries to promote dominance over both the Jewish and Christian faiths. In fact, we have, as I continue to point to, the Islamic holy book instructing the Muslim to wage war on beahlf of Allah against the infidels - that is you Jews and Christians.

And further to that, isn’t that what the competition between beliefs is all about? Always. And without exception. Unless you are incredibly pluralistic, you believe for a variety of reasons that the narrative of belief/faith to which you subscribe, whether it be religious or social, theological, agnostic, or athiestic, is superior to other narratives/faith systems. That is the reason you hold that belief system. If one thought that there were superior reasons to subscribe to another faith system, for instance your belief in its truthfulness, one presumably would. This is known as conversion. All narratives are in competition for prominence…or at least a place. Religious narratives, political narratives, popular cultural narratives, self-help narratives, beer commercial narratives. All want a place in your narrative. But the major religious narratives - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all claim exclusivity. All claim dominance.

By exclusivity, I mean that each states that it must be held independently of the other, or, to put it another way, each narrative claims superiority, in terms of truthfulness, in its depiction of God. For instance one cannot be both Christian and Muslim - the systems are in competition for dominance. Both Christianity and Islam would affirm that, though each does so in a different manner. Radical Islam claims dominance through jihad. If all else fails, wage war. In ideal circumstances, Christianity follows Christ who claimed exclusivity and dominance through submission and peace. Christ states clearly the exclusivity of the Gospel - “No one comes to the Father except by me,” (John 14.6). However, the exaltation of Christ is accomplished through his submission to violence on behalf of others. And Christ’s followers are called to participate in Christ’s lowliness and suffering on belhalf of others.

I am tired of political correctness dictating how we must talk about our faith. All three major religions, except in their diluted forms, claim exclusivity and a greater fidelity to Truth. For Musliims to criticize the Pope for being Catholic is inherently hypocritical, and utterly ridiculous.

This brings me to my second concern with the above complaint. I really hope that the Pope does not apologize for his comments. Why should the head of the Catholic church apologize for supporting the uniqueness of Christianity? Muslims do not apologize for their attempt show the superiority of Islam. Jews do not apologize for their belief in God. Christian faith should not apologize for its inherent exclusivity.

The Gospel is offensive in its exclusivity. I say let the Gospel offend.

About Those Rosie O’Donnell Comments

Posted by casey on September 15th, 2006

The other day Rosie O’Donnell, on The View, made the comment that radical Christianity posed as much threat to Americans as radical Islam.

At that time, I said that, in some limited respect, radical Christianity does pose a threat to some aspects of America.  I noted the bombing of abortion clinics and Fred Phelps.

What I have thought about since is the issue of proportionality.  Rosie made the proportional argument: radical Christianity is just as dangerous as radical Islam.  I do not think that the proportionality of the statement is realistic.  Radical Christians are, in my view, far less in number, and their attacks are fewer.  Further, mainstream Christianity regularly distances itself from these people.

Hot Air has posted video of a debate about Rosie’s comments in which two liberals make the case that yes, radical Christianity is as dangerous as radical Islam to Americans.  Their arguments are not all that great, but, interesting all the same.

Notable is that one of the women makes the argument that what is dangerous about radical Christianity is that it is anti-abortion and anti-condom.  I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t seem to me that even if that sweeping generalization were true, that it would pose as much of a threat to women, or all people, as sharia law, honor killings, bombing of American embassies, or terror attacks like 9/11.

But hey, that’s just me.
